Character Background

• History: It also includes the entire transcript!
• Core Relationships: Patrick Star: Spongebob’s best friend forever! Spongebob always relied on Patrick for support, and he’s the first person he turns to whenever something goes wrong or if he needs help. They had a rough patch in canon, where Patrick abandoned Spongebob’s plan to save Bikini Bottom to start a cult. However they were able to patch things up when Patrick realized that Spongebob does need him. After Patrick saves him, they patch things up and become best friends again, apologizing to each other profusely

Sandy: Spongebob’s second closest friend. He deeply values her knowledge and generally more grounded nature. At this point, Sandy was used as a scapegoat for the volcano blowing up, but while she wanted to move out, Spongebob was insistent that she stay, partially because he believed she could think of a way to stop the volcano and partially because he was terrified about losing a friend. He adores everything about her and the idea of her leaving is heartbreaking for him.

Squidward: Spongebob’s third best friend! It is extremely one sided however. While Spongebob treats Squidward like a close friend who has a mutual adoration for each other, Squidward can’t stand to be around Spongebob and sees him as an annoying child who hasn’t woken up to how horrible this world is. Not that he doesn’t care about Spongebob, and at the end of the day he will support him, but if you ask him he would violently deny being Spongebob’s friend. Besides, Spongebob already knows that Squidward loves him

Mr Krabs: Spongebob’s boss and sort of surrogate father figure. Despite having a father who clearly cares for him, Spongebob looks up to Mr. Krabs as his general father figure, both in the cartoon and in the musical. He values his opinion over all and desperately wants Mr. Krabs to see him as a competent employee. Being told that he could only be a fry cook and could never be a manager is what sends Spongebob on his emotional arc of the musical: discovering if he is just a simple Sponge or if he’s more than that.

Plankton: Plankton is probably the one person Spongebob is closest to outright disliking. While his exact relationship with him varies (some canons have Spongebob consider Plankton a friend while others have him outright state him as not a friend), Spongebob at least understands Plankton as a villainous presence. That doesn’t stop Spongebob from being nice to him, and often falling prey to his lies, but he’s more than willing to stop Plankton when he recognizes him as a threat

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences: + Uniting the town
As the musical goes on, Bikini Bottom slowly descends into chaos. Spongebob spends his entire musical struggling to keep them together. But even when he manages to put the Erupter Interuptor into the volcano, Bikini Bottom is still fighting each other over their survival. In the final few minutes before the volcano erupts, he tells everyone that it doesn't matter if they live if they’re all so divided. And even if they die, they’re going to die together, and he’d rather die among friends rather than enemies.
+Being told by his friends that he’s manager material
Spongebob’s entire arc in the musical hinges on him feeling like he’s just a simple sponge, and sometimes puts himself down compared to his friends by saying that he doesn’t add anything to the team. However, when he’s the only one able to put the Eruptor Interruptor into the volcano, Sandy and Patrick tell Spongebob how important he’s been to the both of them, how he was able to cheer Patrick up when he was freaking out about the television only showing horrifying news about the world ending, how Sandy was ready to give up and leave but Spongebob insisted that she could help them and that he needs her. This gives Spongebob the motivation he needs to drop it in the volcano; all he really needed was reassurance from his friends that he’s good at what he does
(2+) Negative Experiences:
-Mr Krabs Calling him a Simple Sponge
Spongebob harbors a lot of insecurities regarding his usefulness in a situation, which is represented by Mr. Krabs calling him a “simple sponge” who would never be deserving of a managerial role at the Krusty Krab or be able to save Bikini Bottom from complete destruction. This sends him on an arc where he struggles to see himself as a worthwhile person, and that maybe his idea is pointless. But despite that he powers through it because at the end of the day it matters more to him to do good than if he gets attention for it

-Patrick abandoning his mission to save the town to start a cult
Patrick, as mentioned above, was Spongebob’s best friend and his greatest source of strength, physically and emotionally, in helping him with the volcano incident. So when Patrick decides to abandon him and Sandy because people started seeing him as a savior he feels completely betrayed. In the heat of the moment he insults Patrick and tells him that he doesn’t need him for the mission, but after Patrick storms off he lies on the floor, completely crushed. Having his best friend decide that the mission Spongebob came up with wasn’t good enough hurt him, but what hurt him even more was that he yelled at him. Getting angry at his best friend, even for an understandable purpose, is soul crushing to him, and he needs to be motivated by another friend to even stand up again.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Even in the musical, Spongebob has the ability to stretch his limbs and grow new ones, but unlike the cartoon, it seems he is more mortal, and it heavily implied that Spongebob would have died if he had fallen off the mountain. I would like to keep these powers intact
• Blood Type: Warm Blood
• Omen: A starfish- like a real one, not like one from the cartoon. Spongebob gently freaks out about this faceless being for a month
• Blessed Day: July 14th: Spongebob’s canon birthday!
• Patron Pthumerian: Madam Generosity
• Blood Power Manifestation: Sleep Healing, Enhanced Blood Restoration, Enhanced Durability, Spiritual Immortality
